How to Photograph Your Pet for a Portrait
1. High resolution is best. Most modern phones are high enough resolution.
2. One light source. Light defines the form, friends. That means highlights and shadows make your pet’s features stand out. Sun or near a window is best. An overcast day is perfect! Or the shade of a tree.
3. Best to be on their level. I can and have done some interesting angles, but usually it is best to have your camera at about eye level.
4. Take a lot of pics! Don’t hold back! Send me many pictures so I can see your pet’s personality and get a good look at different poses and lightings to get ideas.
5. Backgrounds and collars don’t matter…unless they matter to you. I have done a few interesting portraits in places that matter to people, like the Grand Canyon. Most portraits will have a background that complements the colors.
6. Don’t stress out. If you have a grainy 5-year-old picture you adore, send it. What is most important is that you love the image of your pet.
Why Choose an Oil Pet Portrait
I’ve see them. The instant filter portraits you can order and maybe even print yourself. Add a cute hat. Only $80. Probably made with AI. I’m not knocking it, they are cute and perfect for some people. But hand-painted art will never go out of style and demand. An artist can bring out the subtle beauty that filters cannot. Oil paintings are nearly indestructible once varnished. You won’t need glass; the colors will be vibrant and exquisitely chosen and sequenced. I feel a connection to every pet I paint. That is part of my joy and process in this endeavor. Plus, if you really want a hat or costume, I’ve done some pretty funny compositions, try me.
The portrait of my sweet Potato warms my heart every day. I cannot believe how Rayonna caught her quirky spirit, and the colors are so delicious they transport me to happy times. I was impressed with her turnaround time, Rayonna is a dedicated artist and very professional.
Rayonna did a double portrait of my two crazy mutts, and I’m so pleased with the result. The photo wasn’t ideal, but it meant a lot to me. She pulled out what was important, and caught their playful relationship, and the background, too, which was important to me (a park we always played fetch in).
