My Process for a Pet Portrait
I paint your pet portrait from a photograph we agree on. I start with paper and pan pastel. Blocking in the main shapes, I then use a charcoal pencil to sketch in some details.
I then transfer this drawing to a board or canvas and begin painting. I love to start with the eyes as this holds the majority of the expression. Lines from the drawing are just guides at this point, as painting is another, more expressive form of drawing for me. Here I make adjustments that capture your pet’s or child’s expression and spirit.
For animals I then usually paint in the nose, followed by the ears. This frames the face and I can being to create definition around the head, painting in shadows and lights.
